You know it’s a brown event when…

11 Jan

Brown a.k.a. Desi a.k.a. Indian, Pakistani or other South Asians will all agree to one thing – brown events are hilarious. Apart from the delicious food, sparkling clothing, and foot-tapping music, the social etiquette at our events is quite different from anything you’d expect.  So here are my top 5 picks that are unique to our culture.

You know it’s a brown event when…

  • Someone gets offended.
  • Someone integral to the event refuses to attend at the last minute. (Courtesy of the fabulous Ms. @sa7arfarooq)
  • Cash is forcefully shoved into your pocket/purse.
  • Receiving used jewelery is a form of endearment, i.e. bracelets are removed from one wrist and put onto yours and quite literally, old is gold.
  • A gigantic golgappa is shoved down your throat, no matter what your dietary/allergy restrictions are.

Bonus: If you are a 20-something unmarried girl, at least one person will ask you “When are you getting married?”

Moral of the story: If you are brown, avoid these events as long as you can. If you are not brown, keep your eyes and pockets open next time you attend one.
