Bras for a Cause – Dubai Edition Fashion Show

Dollz in Dubai has a new home! In the next few weeks, we’ll be moving over to www.dollzindubai.com and will eventually stop updating this site. So make sure you check out our new home and register there for the latest updates!

Some time back, we highlighted the great campaign called “Bras for a Cause” to raise awareness about breast cancer within the region.  As an ambassador, we participated in their design contest and appreciate all your votes.  And as October-Breast Cancer Awareness Month winds down, the final leg of this campaign is here.

On Monday, October 24th, Bras for a Cause is holding its Dubai edition Fashion Show at the Monarch hotel. After a successful show in Beirut, the Dubai show is packed with glitz and glamour to support a great cause. We are excited to see designs from Dubai-based designer Amanda Gedeon of BOW and the region’s prominent bloggers walking down the runway in these special designs.

Mumzworld – More than just mums

I’m a big, Big, BIG fan of online shopping. I miss the ease of online shopping found in the US/UK. My Aramex Shop’n’Ship account has been a godsend, but I do wish there were more local choices.

In recent times, e-commerce has picked up significantly in Dubai with both new players and big hitters setting up online portals (I highly recommend JadoPado for your Apple/Blackberry/gadget needs), but we still lack a powerhouse like Amazon in the region. That is why I was extremly excited to hear about Mumzworld.

Mumzworld calls itself the Middle East’s largest online shopping site for Everything Mother, Baby and Child. They currently have over 18,000 products and all the leading brands including Lego, Crayola, Barbie, and Mattel. Moreover, you get delivery within 2-3 days in the UAE and free delivery for all orders over 200 AED. Outside of the UAE? No worries, they promise to delivery within 7-10 days regionally as well.

So what can the average fashionista/beauty addict/Bollywood lover buy from Mumzworld? A lot! For starters they carry 2 amazing jewelery lines: Lovelinks and Sia Select. I purchased a beautiful necklace+earring set from Sia Select pre-Mumzworld but had to unfortunately coordinate cash payment and delivery myself. Thankfully that is all taken care via Mumzworld now.

They also carry a wide selection of beads, charms, necklaces and bracelets from Lovelinks.  They currently have a special deal going on where proceeds go to Breast Cancer Awareness, so support a great cause!

I couldn’t help buying the world edition of Monopoly last week. As a child, my parents always bought me “intellectual” games such as cardboard puzzles or mindbenders, but I decided to splurge in a classic board game.

Even if you aren’t a Mum, you can find plenty of things to keep your credit card busy. So check out the region’s newest shopping site and tell them Dollz sent you! You can also find them on Facebook and Twitter.

Disclaimer: I work with the Mumzworld team, so this post is written with a little bit of bias. Just a little 🙂

Urban Decay Naked Palette Available in Dubai

Urban Decay Naked Palette Available in Dubai

ATTENTION – WE’VE MOVED! Dollz in Dubai has moved to www.DollzinDubai.com. Find this and more related articles there.

A few months back we be broke the news that Urban Decay was finally available in Dubai.  A lot of the Dubai beauty addicts (us included) gave our credit cards a workout while ooh-ing over the amazing UD range.  Well get those credit cards ready because the much-awaited eyeshadow Naked Palette is finally available in Dubai! A few lucky ones were able to snag the limited pieces from the first shipment but Sephora Dubai just received an extended stock of Naked Palettes.  Sephora Mall of the Emirates and Dubai Mall are the only places in the Middle East to receive the exclusive palette and it is available for AED 220. The Naked Palette has been a big hit in the United States and even though it was first released in June 2010, I wasn’t able to find it in stores in the US last September, so I’m excited that it is finally available here.  The Naked Palette is great because it contains a lot of wearable neutral colors along with a few colorful ones to help transition your day look to night.  I highly recommend this palette for eyeshadow novices as it will give you a great selection to start from and play with. Eyeshadow shades included are:

  • Virgin – shimmery nude
  • Sin – shimmery pink (my favorite shade of Urban Decay Primer Potion)
  • Naked – matte beige
  • Sidecar – shimmery bronze
  • Buck – matte beige brown
  • Half Baked – shimmery gold (LOVE this one)
  • Smog – shimmery dark bronze
  • Darkhouse – shimmery bronze brown
  • Toasted – shimmery pink bronze
  • Hustle – shimmery brown
  • Creep – shimmery blue black
  • Gunmetal – shimmery bluish grey (LOVE this one too)
The US version comes with a dual-ended eyeliner but the Middle East version comes with an eyeshadow brush and mini version of the Primer Potion in original to help get you started.
So hurry up and pick up your Naked Palette today!

Abaya Fashion meets Project Runway

Having lived in Dubai for most of my life, I don’t think much when I see a woman wearing an abaya.  For those of you unfamiliar with Islamic culture, abaya refers to the black cloak that Muslim women wear, while hijab refers to the head-covering specifically.  While abayas are generally thought to consist of a simple black cloak, abaya fashion has evolved considerably in recent years.  When I arrived in Dubai in 1994, the majority of abayas I saw were very basic, but overtime I’ve noticed abayas to include gorgeous embroidery, colored panels and different styles and cuts.

A few weeks ago, myself and bloggers Zahra (Lyla Loves Fashion) and Meho (Oversized Shades & Coffee) met with one of the UAE’s leading abaya designers, Amal Murad. Amal spoke to us about the world of abaya fashion and I was absolutely spellbound.  I knew that there was more to abayas than yards of black fabric but I didn’t realize how much thought and design went into it. Amal’s designs are beautiful and the following is one of my favorites.

Amal then told us about the Persil Abaya Shampoo Arwa’a Abaya III: Mission Innovation, a show on MBC that is looking for the next great abaya designer, or what I like to call it, the Middle East’s answer to Project Runway.  Arwa3 Abaya features 8 upcoming abaya designers.  Each week they get a challenge from an Arab celebrity and have to design an abaya based on those guidelines.  The celebrity panel then chooses the bottom 3 contestants, of which one is eliminated via audience polling.  Check out the 1st episode of Arwa3 Abaya where all the contestants were introduced.  They were given their first assignment by Sumayyah Al Suwaidi, the first female Emirati digital artist and head of her own fashion label called “س” (‘Seen’ in Arabic). Summayah requested for an abaya that was uniquely colored but not obnoxiously loud, while also incorporating the vintage trend as well.

Even though I don’t speak a word of Arabic, I feel drawn in to the world of abaya fashion and am even inspired to go buy my very first abaya!  If you are interested in learning more about abaya fashion and the Persil Abaya Shampoo Arwa’a Abaya III competition, check out their Facebook page or watch it on MBC 1’s morning show every Monday.

Fun fact/fairytale about abayas: Amal told us that centuries ago, abayas weren’t limited to black. However, one day, the importer only received a consignment of black fabric.  In order to prevent losses, he asked one of the famous romantic poets to write a poem extolling the beauty of black abayas.  The women fell in love with the poem and black abayas became the trend and thus the norm after that day!

Si Fashion Galerie Designers’ Contest 2011

Last week we were invited to the launch event of Si Fashion Galerie Designers’ Contest 2011. Starting from the 25th of May to the 31st of July, pieces from 18 upcoming designers will be on display at the Si Fashion Galerie.  The winning designer will be selected through a combination of votes from the judging panel, as well as sales of actual pieces.

This was a lively event and a great platform for upcoming designers to showcase their talent.  What we loved most about the event was the variety of work between the designers under a single venue. There was also a great range of conservative, but glamourous clothes, for those women who prefer to cover up a little more.

So if you are looking for some summer colorful wedding outfits, check out Si Fashion Galerie and support the talented local designers.

Si Fashion Galerie is located on Jumeira Beach Road, Villa 399B. Visit Si Fashion Galerie for more information or contact them at 04-3490775.

Jennifer Lopez’s Love & Glamour

Jennifer Lopez is everywhere these days!  I was hesitant when they announced her to be the new judge of American Idol, but I have to admit she’s been doing an amazing job this season.  I’ll confess that one of the reasons I enjoy watching American Idol more this season is to see J.Lo’s fashion and makeup choices.  I absolutely love how much she varies her hair and makeup and can bounce from sexy to cute in an instant.

J.Lo’s a great businesswoman and has timed the release of her new single with American Idol.  While it may be fairly inspired by the Lambada, “On the Floor” gets me in the dancing mode every time I listen to it.

So TV appearance-check. Hot new single-check. New signature product-check.

Sephora Dubai has just launched J.Lo’s new signature fragrance, Love & Glamour.  The first thing I thought when I saw this product was how the bottle was a perfect embodiment for J.Lo. The scent is floral with a hint of musk and hence perfect for Dubai summer evenings. So if you want a bit more of J.Lo in your life, head over to Sephora and check it out!

Disclaimer: This press release was sent to us by Sephora PR. The product hasn’t been tested/reviewed by us yet.

Urban Decay in Dubai!

Urban Decay in Dubai!

ATTENTION – WE’VE MOVED! Dollz in Dubai has moved to www.DollzinDubai.com. Find this and more related articles there.

UPDATE:

Sephora PR has provided us price lists for the UD products in Dubai. You can also read about the products launched in more detail here. Urban Decay products are exclusively available in Sephora Mall of the Emirates and Dubai Mall.

———————————————-

Last week I heard one of the most brilliant pieces of news for any beauty addict: Urban Decay is going be available in Dubai. I guess all that complaining to Sephora sales associates finally paid off! And thankfully, unlike most Dubai rumors, this was true and I paid Sephora Mall of Emirates a visit today to check out the collection myself.

If you are a new UD user, you MUST check out the following products:

  • 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils are the best eye liners I have EVER used – yes, even better than Mac! Their staying power on the waterline is amazing, the color range is fantastic, and they are incredibly smooth to apply.  Start your collection with Zero and Bourbon and you shall be back for more.
  • Primer Potion (UDPP) is the holy-grail of eyeshadow primers. I love the champagne-colored “Sin” which works great on it’s own for a natural look.  Unfortunately, the UDPP available here is in the older, more-wasteful packaging, but it’s still a great product.
  • UD eyeshadows are extremely pigmented and smooth. I noticed the “Fun” palette was stocked and it’s definitely a good set.
  • I’ve heard good things about the 24/7 Glide-On Shadow Pencils, 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencils and After Glow Cheek Tints but will require a rigorous review to comment further.

For the UD aficionados, a couple of things to note about the Dubai store:

  • Not all the testers have been opened up so check the full stash to see if there are colors missing.
  • The lustworthy Naked Palette is not in stock yet. It might be coming in the next shipment but no guarantees.
  • Don’t bother buying the Tinted Moisturizer since they are still stocking the old formula in Dubai.

I ended up getting 2 additional 24/7 liners in Lust (purple) and Deviant (blue) to add to my older collection of Oil Slick (black glitter), Flipside (aqua), Bourbon (brown) and Dime (silver). I also decided to test out the 24/7 Glide On Eye Shadow in Lit (gold) and the Glitter Eyeliner in Glam Rock (silver). I’m already regretting not buying the Fun palette so I’ll probably head back to pick it up later this week.

So what are you waiting for? Rush to MOE/Dubai Mall for your UD fix and let me know what you bought!

P.S. There is a special launch event being held at Sephora, MOE on April 27th and 28th from 4-10 pm so don’t forget to check it out!
