The Costume Institute Gala 2011

The Oscars and Golden Globes get a lot of coverage from the fashion magazines but the true fashion event of the year has to be the Costume Institute Gala, also known as the Met Ball. The ball celebrates the opening of the Metropolitan Museum’s fashion exhibit at the Costume Institute.  The event hosted by Vogue brings out the glitterati of the fashion world in their finest threads. Let’s take a look at the best looks from this year’s event. (All pictures and information taken from the The Cut).

Designer of the evening
It has to be Stella McCartney this year who designed the most number of beautiful gowns with Eva Mendes and Naomi Watts being standouts. Other honorable mentions go to Missoni for the “funkier” gowns and Michael Kors for a good use of color with simple silhouettes.

This year’s exhibition is in honor of the late Alexander McQueen. Considering both Kate and her sister chose McQueen for the Royal Wedding, the head designer, Sarah Burton, also opted for a white gown. Other McQueen wearers included Salma Hayek and Giselle.

All in Stella McCartney: Hailee Steinfeld, Madonna, Rihanna, Eva Mendes, Naomi Watts

In Missoni: Joy Bryant and Margherita Missoni; In Michael Kors: Caroline Trentini and Diana Argon

All in Alexander McQueen: Sarah Burton, Giselle Bundchen, and Salma Hayek

Dresses I should hate but I love
Blake Lively’s sari/evening gown hybrid and Freida Pinto’s tuxedo dress tie for this accolade. As an aside, both of them are designed by Chanel.

The Evening’s Favorites
I absolutely love Jason Wu‘s creation worn by Diane Kruger. It’s simple but has the wow factor. Now if only I had her legs.  The most wearable dress has to be the Dolce & Gabanna lace dress worn by Chanel Iman (she is SO skinny); it’s absolutely adorable.

What were they thinking?
I never understand how some celebrities manage to show up as complete red carpet disasters but at least it keeps us going with great gossip. This year’s worst offenders were Lucy Liu in the feathered monstrosity, Jennifer Lopez in the flowered bolero, Beyonce with the repeat gold fishtail and I’m really not sure what to say about Naomi Campbell.

  • High Necklines: I love how higher necklines are back in fashion. Renee Zellweger, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Williams, and Gwyneth Paltrow all show off how sexy doesn’t really mean more skin.
  • Cutouts: These were spoted on the red carpet several times. While they may border on trashy, Ginnifer Goodwin, Emma Roberts and Kerry Washington pulled off this trend to varying degrees of success.
  • Gold Tones: The color of the season seems to be gold, nude, chamapage and all flesh-colored tones. Designers brigthened up this “boring” color with ruffles and sequeins as seen on Maggie Q, Melanie Trump, and Ashley Greene.
  • Brights: While there was the usual mix of reds, black, and white, many embraced spring with eye-catching brights. Michelle Monaghan and Brooklyn Decker went for the pinks while Vera Wang and Zoe Saldana chose yellow.
  • Head pieces: The red carpet had a little more sparkle this year with many stars wearing headpieces. I wonder if this trend will filter down to the masses. (On a side note, considering she created so many gorgeous dresses, Stella McCartney’s outfit really disappoints.)
