2010 Wrap-up: 20 Things That Became Obsolete This Decade

08 Jan

I came across this article from the Huffington Post about 20 things that became obsolete this decade.  I agree that most of these items will completely disappear in our lifetime and most of them are for the better.  However, there is one thing I’m already  starting to miss – collecting physical items such as CDs, DVDs, books, and letters.

One of my childhood friends had the biggest film and music collection in her house.  Sleepovers there were the best since no matter how much everyone’s tastes differed, you could find a movie that we would all agree to watch.

I was also quite a bookworm while growing up and at one point had amassed a collection of more than 500 books.  Even thought I’m very much a techy, I haven’t been converted to reading books or magazines on an iPad or Kindle.  And most ladies will agree with me that you definitely get more pleasure from flipping through an actual magazine than an electronic version.  Considering how much of a bookwork I was as a kid, it isn’t surprising that Belle is my favorite Disney princess and thus I find this to be one of the most romantic scenes in a movie:

Then there are letters! I got a birthday card in the mail from Ms. AH last year and I loved it! While I appreciate the ease in communicating via email or instant message, I will always cherish that card.  The fact that she had to visit a store, pick out a card, and find a way to mail it showed me how much love and thought was put in. And without letters, there would be no love letters! I’m quite saddened that the next generation won’t identify with romantic songs like this:

I know with the Internet becoming such an integral part of our lives and everything being available electronically, there is no requirement for maintaining physical collections.  Furthermore, this should hopefully cutdown on waste and be more environmentally friendly.  Nevertheless, I will miss wasting hours in bookstores and video rental stores.

So what do you think? Is there anything from this list you will miss or is it all for the better?
